Pillows and chairs&nbsp; knocked to the ground like fallen palm trees after a storm.&nbsp; Only the books remain &#8211; exhausted, mute, and disheveled \u2013 to breathe the silence.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy,\u201d I ask, \u201cour work never finished?\u201d&nbsp; Dalyn smiles.&nbsp; Always my assistant smiles at questions without answers.&nbsp; I pick up a library card&nbsp; on the floor.&nbsp; I read the book titles written on it.&nbsp; The dates too.&nbsp; <em>Wow<\/em>, <em>a book lover.<\/em>&nbsp; \u201cWho is he?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeace, Grade 3,\u201d Dalyn grins.&nbsp; She knows all the students in Keys.&nbsp; Names and grade levels.&nbsp; Their parents too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I turn the card.&nbsp; Only five books more to get a new one.&nbsp; \u201cTwo books he can borrow on his second card, yes?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s his second.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cS-se-second???\u201d&nbsp; I add the books he had already borrowed.&nbsp; I write the numbers in the air.&nbsp; \u201cTwenty in one card.&nbsp; Another twenty, less 5.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c35 books.\u201d Dalyn smiles again.&nbsp; She probably wonders how I came to be her boss.&nbsp; I envy people with mental math DNA.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c35 a month?&nbsp; Grade 3?\u201d&nbsp; <em>Impressive.<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBorrows every two days.&nbsp; With his mom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlways Geronimo Stilton?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll Geronimo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I stare at card.
